Iranian officials portray Republican midterm election defeat as a victory for Tehran's resistance to U.S. and Israeli military pressure

Senior Iranian officials have portrayed the Republican Party's defeat in the U.S. midterm elections as a political victory for Iran, arguing that American voters rejected Washington's military confrontation with Tehran and its support for Israel.

The remarks followed Tuesday's congressional elections, which Iranian political figures interpreted as evidence of growing public opposition to the Trump administration's foreign policy.

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran's parliament speaker and a senior figure in negotiations with Washington, argued that the election results reflected the political consequences of aligning American interests with Israel's military objectives.

According to Al Jazeera, Ghalibaf urged U.S. policymakers to prioritize their country's national interests rather than what he described as Israel's expansionist ambitions.

He warned that an American administration that disregards public opinion at home risks further political consequences, presenting the election outcome as a warning against continuing the same foreign policy approach.

Iranian officials described the Republican losses as a strategic setback for Washington and argued that Tehran's resistance to American and Israeli military pressure had contributed to the administration's domestic political difficulties.

Their interpretation placed the conflict with Iran at the center of the election results, suggesting that American voters had become increasingly unwilling to support military operations undertaken in coordination with Israel.

The comments also reflected Tehran's broader argument that military pressure has failed to force Iran to abandon its political and security positions.

However, the Iranian officials' interpretation does not establish that opposition to the war was the decisive factor behind the Republican losses.

American elections are influenced by multiple domestic and international issues, including economic conditions, healthcare, immigration and public assessments of the administration's performance.

The Iranian response nevertheless illustrates how the U.S. election outcome is being interpreted beyond Washington, particularly by governments directly affected by American military and foreign policy decisions.

For Tehran, the results provide an opportunity to argue that the political costs of confrontation with Iran extend beyond the battlefield and into American domestic politics.
