Trump faces widespread voter disapproval as Democrats take control of Congress in major U.S. midterm election victory

President Donald Trump is facing widespread voter dissatisfaction following Democratic victories in the U.S. midterm elections, with new Associated Press polling data indicating that a majority of Americans disapprove of his performance and support stronger congressional oversight of the White House.

The November 3 elections delivered control of both the House of Representatives and Senate to Democrats, dealing a major political setback to Trump as he enters the final two years of his presidency.

According to polling data reported by the Associated Press, approximately six in ten voters disapprove of Trump's job performance, while nearly 70% support greater congressional oversight of executive power.

The figures suggest that dissatisfaction with the administration extends beyond traditional Democratic voters, raising questions about Trump's ability to maintain political support amid economic pressures and an increasingly contentious foreign policy.

One of the most significant shifts occurred among younger Americans. Voters under 30, who were almost evenly divided between Trump and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, moved decisively toward Democrats in the midterms.

According to the reported findings, roughly seven in ten voters in that age group supported Democratic candidates for the House of Representatives.

Democrats also secured notable Senate victories in traditionally Republican states, including Kansas, Texas and South Carolina, underscoring the extent of the party's electoral gains.

In Michigan, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed defeated Republican Mike Rogers, becoming the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate. Representative Ilhan Omar also secured reelection to the House despite Trump's public calls for her resignation.

The results reflected growing voter frustration with economic conditions, including inflation, higher energy prices and the financial consequences of the ongoing U.S.-Israeli war against Iran.

Trump acknowledged that the conflict had affected Republican support, recognizing that Americans were increasingly unwilling to absorb higher domestic fuel costs.

The president nevertheless defended his decision to pursue military action against Iran, insisting that it remained justified by the country's long-term strategic interests.

The Democratic takeover of Congress is expected to complicate Trump's legislative agenda and increase scrutiny of his administration's decisions, particularly regarding military operations, economic policy and federal spending.

With both chambers under opposition control, congressional investigations and legislative confrontations could become defining features of the remainder of Trump's presidency.

The election results and polling figures point to a significant shift in the American political landscape, with economic concerns, foreign policy and dissatisfaction with Washington's leadership reshaping voter preferences across demographic and geographic lines.
