Ted Cruz calls Republican midterm defeat a ‘blue tsunami’ as Democrats take Texas and he blames Iran war, tariffs and rising costs

Republican Senator Ted Cruz has described his party’s defeat in the 2026 U.S. midterm elections as a political disaster comparable to the Watergate era, acknowledging that Democrats had swept statewide races in Texas and blaming the losses on the prolonged Iran war, tariffs and the rising cost of living.

Speaking on his podcast on Wednesday, November 4, the Texas senator said the scale of the Republican defeat had exceeded the warnings he had issued before the election.

“2026 was not simply a blue wave. It was a blue tsunami,” Cruz said, describing the result as a devastating rejection of Republican leadership.

He compared the defeat to the political backlash Republicans faced during the Watergate scandal, saying the party had suffered a historic repudiation.

The losses were particularly significant in Texas, where Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican Governor Greg Abbott and Democrat James Talarico won the U.S. Senate race against Republican Ken Paxton.

Texas had not elected a Democratic governor since 1990 or a Democratic U.S. senator since 1988. Cruz, whose Senate term continues until 2030, acknowledged that he was now the state’s only remaining statewide-elected Republican.

“Texas is blue,” Cruz said. “That is a hard sentence to utter, but Texas, today at least, is blue.”

Cruz said he had repeatedly warned Republicans that they could lose major races in Texas, but too few party officials had taken the possibility seriously.

Turning to the reasons for the defeat, Cruz criticized the administration’s handling of the economy, particularly the impact of tariffs on consumer prices.

“Food is too high. Gas is too high. Diesel is too high. Insurance is too high. Life is too high,” he said, arguing that Republican lawmakers had failed to respond adequately to the financial pressures facing American families.

The senator also criticized the duration of the U.S. war against Iran, calling for an end to the conflict while opposing any agreement that would provide substantial funds to Tehran.

“The Iran war has dragged on too long. It should have been brief, decisive, and over,” Cruz said.

He acknowledged the anger of voters who believed Republicans had failed to address their economic difficulties and urged his party to rebuild support among working-class Americans through conservative economic policies.

Cruz also warned that Democrats, newly empowered in Washington, could launch investigations and impeachment proceedings targeting President Donald Trump, members of his administration and political allies, including billionaire Elon Musk.

Despite his criticism of the election results, Cruz said he had contacted Democratic Senator-elect James Talarico to congratulate him and discuss potential cooperation on issues affecting Texas.

“Last night, I called James Talarico. I congratulated him on his very impressive victory,” Cruz said, describing their conversation as pleasant.

He identified flood relief for the Texas Hill Country and efforts to bring the proposed Space Academy to the state as areas where the two senators might work together.

Cruz ended his remarks by promising that Republicans would seek to regain control of Texas, calling for a renewed focus on working-class voters and free-market conservatism.

“Texas will be red again,” he said. “Texas is still Texas.”
