Marco Rubio weighs leaving Trump administration for 2028 GOP nomination after Republicans lose control of both chambers, as officials deny departure reports

The Independent reports that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is considering resigning from President Trump's administration to pursue the 2028 Republican presidential nomination, following the party's major midterm losses and loss of control of both chambers of Congress.

The report cites sources in Washington and the British government as saying Rubio may seek to distance himself from controversial administration policies, particularly the war with Iran, to strengthen his position against potential rival Vice President JD Vance.

The White House and State Department have strongly denied the reports, dismissing claims that Rubio is about to leave as baseless.
