Trump Orders Justice Department to Investigate Democrats Over Alleged Threats to Officials and Republican Donors

President Donald Trump said Saturday he had ordered the Justice Department to investigate Democrats he accused of threatening administration officials and Republican donors, calling their actions “extortion at the highest level.” He offered no evidence of criminal wrongdoing.

In a Truth Social post on November 7, Trump said Democrats were threatening Attorney General Todd Blanche and others with impeachment and punishment despite, he asserted, having no grounds to do so.

“They’re threatening our Donors,” he wrote, alleging that Republican supporters faced imprisonment simply for their political affiliations. “This is Weaponization and Lawfare at another level.”

Trump singled out Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan, accusing her of threatening to pursue young people who hold Republican views. Slotkin had instead argued that investigations into potential misconduct by Trump administration officials could deter young people from taking jobs in the administration. She has said Republicans misrepresented her comments.

“The imprisonment should be against these EXTORTIONISTS,” Trump wrote. He said Democratic leaders had sent threatening letters to innocent people, adding: “I am ordering the Department of Justice to look into this criminal act, immediately!”

The confrontation follows Democrats’ victories in the November 3 midterms, which gave them control of both chambers of Congress beginning in January. Democratic lawmakers have pledged investigations into the administration, including its spending, business dealings and possible abuses of power.

Congress has the authority to conduct oversight and initiate impeachment proceedings. Trump did not identify a specific crime committed by the Democrats he accused, and there was no immediate confirmation that the Justice Department had opened an investigation in response to his post.
