China and the U.S. have agreed to expand coal trade under a new reciprocal tariff deal covering about $30 billion of goods from each side.

China’s Commerce Ministry said U.S. coal will be included in the tariff-cut framework, with Beijing lowering duties to facilitate imports in 2027 and 2028. Around 90% of the goods covered by the broader agreement will be reduced to most-favored-nation tariff rates.

The White House says China will import 10 million metric tons of U.S. coal in 2027 and another 10 million tons in 2028. Beijing says the purchases will supplement China’s domestic coal market while providing stable revenue and jobs for the U.S. coal industry.
