Former German vice chancellor Robert Habeck says Germany’s historical responsibility toward Israel should not prevent open criticism of how the country has conducted the war in Gaza.

Speaking on ARD, Habeck said Israel was shaped by the determination never again to allow Jewish life to be destroyed by force, making it a state prepared to defend itself aggressively when it sees its security threatened.

But he said Gaza crossed another line. “That step has gone far too far in many places,” Habeck said, arguing that legitimate questions about Israel’s actions should not be silenced out of fear that criticism will automatically be branded antisemitic.

Habeck also said there was substantial evidence of war crimes in Gaza, while stressing that antisemitism itself must be confronted wherever it appears.
