India has invoked emergency powers to boost electricity generation as coal stocks at power plants fall to their lowest level in nearly three years.
The government has ordered captive coal-fired plants of at least 50 MW to operate at maximum capacity and sell surplus electricity to the grid.
Coal inventories at grid-connected stations have fallen by more than half from a year ago as generators burn more fuel to offset weak hydropower and the sharp drop in solar output after sunset.
The measures come amid growing nighttime power shortages, when India’s grid loses solar generation and becomes more dependent on coal-fired capacity.
