Greece and France are considering a limited reroute of the Great Sea Interconnector to keep the planned Crete-Cyprus power cable outside Türkiye’s new Fethiye-Kaş marine park near Kastellorizo.

The move comes after French infrastructure group Meridiam acquired a 66% stake in the project in August, giving Paris a much larger role alongside cable manufacturer Nexans. Kathimerini reports that Athens and Paris are considering notifying Türkiye before seabed surveys resume rather than seeking Ankara’s permission.

About 40% of the seabed survey work remains unfinished, largely between Karpathos and Cyprus. Earlier surveys were disrupted south of Kasos in 2024 after Turkish warships challenged the operation.

Athens is also weighing an extension of Greek territorial waters to 12 nautical miles south and west of Crete before surveys restart. No new date for the offshore work has yet been set.
