Andrew Bailey is leaving the FBI’s No. 2 leadership team after barely a year, adding another change at the top of the bureau under Director Kash Patel.

Bailey said Monday that he was stepping down as co-deputy director and would “return to my family in Missouri.” His final day is expected to be Oct. 2.

The New York Times reports that Bailey and Patel had an increasingly strained relationship, at times going long stretches without speaking, while Bailey was gradually pushed to the sidelines.

Bailey had shared the deputy director role with veteran FBI official Christopher Raia. No replacement has been announced, leaving open whether the bureau will keep the two-deputy structure or Raia will remain as its sole No. 2.
