A rare Germany-Russia meeting has triggered a political backlash in Berlin, with critics saying Sergei Lavrov used the encounter to make Germany look weak.

Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul met Lavrov for just over 20 minutes in New York on Sept. 26, the first bilateral talks at that level since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Afterward, Lavrov publicly dismissed the exchange, saying he had heard little beyond Berlin’s familiar positions. CDU lawmaker Roderich Kiesewetter said Lavrov had effectively brushed Wadephul off and then ridiculed him, while security expert Nico Lange accused Moscow of using “diplomatic tricks” to put Germany in a weaker position.

Wadephul acknowledged that the meeting produced no breakthrough, but defended opening a direct channel, arguing that talks with adversaries are still necessary.
