Speaking about the Iraqi leader, Trump said al-Zaidi had initially been given little chance of succeeding but ultimately won decisively after receiving his backing.

“I endorsed him, and he ended up winning a landslide,” Trump said.

Al-Zaidi did not win a direct nationwide vote for prime minister. He emerged as a compromise candidate after Iraq’s parliamentary election and months of coalition bargaining, after Trump had publicly opposed former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s return to power.
